Into the Atmosphere: Jay Kvapil and Sean McGaughey

Mindy Solomon is pleased to present a two-person exhibition featuring Sean McGaughey and Jay Kvapil. Working from a position of abstraction, both artists embrace texture and surface as a means of conveying a sense of space.

Kvapil writes of his work: “Most of the recent pieces allude to landscape, intentionally so. I grew up in Arizona, a land of vast desert expanses, but also one rich in intimate pictorial spaces found in small rocks and stones. Some works contain an obvious horizon line, suggesting a distant landscape, while others evoke more intimate terrains through which we travel, whether physically or in the mind, without a fixed point of reference.”

Like Kvapil, McGaughey also cites environment as a central influence. His immersive, large-scale abstract paintings draw from Abstract Expressionism, music, the California sky, and his personal practice of Nichiren Buddhism. The colors and energetic marks within his paintings weave in and out of one another, shifting and transforming from what may begin as simple, representational suggestions of facial features into landscapes or even floral forms.

The booth will feature a conversation between two and three-dimensional objects that embrace the shared language of gesture.
