Greetings From Yucatán
Mindy Solomon is pleased to present Greetings from Yucatán, a solo exhibition of long time gallery artist Ernesto Garcia Sanchez. Garcia’s first exhibition with the gallery was in 2015 when he was just 24 years old.
Solomon writes: “Working with Ernesto for the last 8 years has been a pleasure. Watching him develop his work based on the repetition of line and form as he engages with three-dimensionality has been fascinating. To observe the continued refinement of ideas and the evolution of craftsmanship is one of the benefits of representation. His move from Cuba to Mexico was instrumental in his growth. Allowing the space to experiment with ideas. I believe this newest exhibition will synthesis all of his research into one grand presentation.”
Garcia states: “This is my fifth solo show with Mindy Solomon Gallery. This exhibition is for me, a celebration of 10 years of work and friendship in which I am interested in sharing a selection of works produced this year, at the same time, these works represent a consolidation of my previous process, which in this case, are transformed into new experiences, related to a change of context, a new reality. Anyone who has seen any of my previous proposals, especially those that were produced or exhibited in Havana, might notice that Yucatán has been a place that has greatly influenced my work over the past 3 years. It has not been for me any intention to represent anything specific about this context, nor even occupy it as a theme, but somehow, the information is expressed through a new constructive synthesis, a search for color and an incorporation of the object into the pictorial. In a different way than the previous Ernesto. Every time I realize that two characters inhabit me, one is an abstract painter and the other is an artist who is interested in investigating objects and space. The success of this process lies in both agreeing.”
The works featured in the exhibition are on canvas with wooden objects incorporated on the surface. These forms create a sense of endless line- moving into a broader expanse and interrupting traditional spacial boundaries. These investigations also utilize diverse color interactions, harmonious and vibrational. Additionally, a piece that was preciously exhibited at the Salon New York Design Fair in 2022 will be on display, a three-part functional artwork/credenza. The inclusion of this sculptural element will fuse all of the ideas into one cohesive presentation. We are very excited to share this body of work with a broader audience in a contemporary art platform.
