EXPO Chicago
Mindy Solomon is pleased to present a new body of work by Jeremy Olson that speaks to the notion of leisure and recreation.
In his own words: “For my Expo Chicago solo presentation I was definitely thinking about leisure, both the desire for it and the kinds of images that feed that desire. The paintings are all set in a sort of island/ Mediterranean environment, with design elements meant to reflect a very specific kind of luxury. There is a sense of space and ample time to lounge, to read, to just hang out, etc. All things I myself desire and definitely do not have the time to enjoy. It’s all very utopian.”
“This is not intended as a critique exactly, its more an exploration of a certain kind of fantasy that is increasingly unattainable for most. My otherworldly creatures and mod- ernist aesthetics create the space and intention of the imagery. There is an element of menace as well… the idea that we are surprised by what we are seeing.”
“The three-dimensional objects are meant to be formally appealing but also contain a kind of alien agency, like they have their own agenda somehow. We like to choose the objects we surround ourselves with, but they can themselves become too much some- times. The overall installation, with the curtains and lamps, is meant to create a sense of place that makes all the work cohere in an intimate way”.
We are excited to share Leisure Longer with a new audience of art appreciators and col- lectors.
