Acoples (Couplings)
Mindy Solomon is pleased to feature Mexico-based Cuban artist Ernesto Garcia Sanchez in his fourth exhibition with the gallery and third solo presentation. Continuing his visual investigation of line and geometric forms, Sanchez offers a fresh perspective on abstraction, painting, and the construction of space.
In discussing Couplings, Sanchez states: “Couplings is part of an investigation I have been developing in recent years around painting, geometry, and the construction of space. In this series, I am interested in questioning the idea that an artwork is definitively resolved once the image appears to have reached a conclusion. Each piece begins as a painting. Once completed, I cut it apart and reconstruct it to explore a new internal logic and discover relationships that were not present in its initial resolution. Rather than correcting the original composition, I am interested in putting it back into play and opening new possibilities within the process itself.
The idea of coupling runs throughout the series. It refers not only to the joining of fragments, but also to the way different actions—drawing, painting, cutting, shifting, and reconstructing—enter into dialogue with one another. At the same time, the work explores the relationship between different dimensions of visual language: drawing, painting, object, surface, and volume. Couplings approaches the creative process as an open field, where each decision can become the starting point for a new form of organization.”
Sanchez has organized the exhibition to emphasize each individual work as an object within space, while simultaneously considering its relationship to the works and forms surrounding it. The installation extends the dialogue between painting and object, inviting viewers to experience each work not only as an autonomous composition, but also as part of a larger spatial and visual conversation.
With this newest body of work, Sanchez brings together ideas that have informed his practice from its earliest stages, revealing how those initial impulses have evolved through an ongoing process of experimentation, deconstruction, and reconstruction.
Ernesto Garcia Sanchez (b. Cuba, 1989) studied at the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts from 2005-2009 graduating in painting, and later at the ISA Higher Institute of Arts in 2010-2015. During the years 2010 – 2012 he taught a free painting and drawing workshop for children in Havana.
He also held a creative workshop for the children of Holbox ,Mexico as part of the residence island. Parallel to his work as an artist, he is the founder of the Taller 62 project in the city of Merida, Yucatan. Taller 62 is a project that unifies an art studio, space for exhibitions and a caffeshop. The initiative of this project is to create a space for artistic interaction in the community of the city of Mérida.
