90 Days of Exploration
Mindy Solomon is pleased to present the 4th exhibition of Cuban artist Ernesto Garcia Sanchez. Presented virtually, this show brings into focus his continued fascination with line. Through a series of drawings and models, Sanchez creates minute variations that viewed in totality form a comprehensive body of work.
Sequestered in Mexico for the last few months, Sanchez writes of his experience:
“In the middle of this world situation I find myself in Holbox, an island in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico far from Havana, and the daily life to which I am accustomed. At first, a feeling of fear and insecurity prevailed within me regarding all the changes taking place. As of today, all that transformation has become a source of inspiration, and has continued to nurture the progressions that had already been activated in Havana. The past three months have allowed me to review my processes and explore other materials, other forms, as well as investigate the essentials, and consider the mental limitations that have inhibited me for many years. So almost without intending to, a new body of work has developed that is now the core of this exhibition.
This project aims to show two bodies of work: the first is the continuation of a large investigation of drawings, with a focus on line that I have been working on for three years. The second is a new group of works that have emerged in tandem, in which I use cardboard and wood as a three-dimensional interpretation of the drawings. I am interested in creating a dialogue between both visualities. The two series share a basic principle: the grid. This is a structure that represents the unconscious way of separating things. In this case, the segmentation becomes unification, one depends on the other, and thus the objects are built.
I am interested in the integration and harmony of the elements, and the use of abstraction as a spiritual and immunological defense mechanism.”
Through small-scale relief and drawn works, Sanchez creates a comprehensive series of images referencing line- in all its permutations.
About Ernesto García Sánchez
Ernesto Garcias Sanches was born December 27th 1989 in Havana, Cuba. He lived in a small neighborhood called Luyanó, until the age of five. Then, in 1995, his family moved to Santos Suarez neighborhood. Both neighborhoods are in the same district. I attended Roberto Casals Elementary school from 1996 to 2002. After that, I went to Simón Bolívar Junior High School where I graduated in 2004. After graduation, I spent a whole year preparing myself, studying some art disciplines like: drawing, painting, sculpture and others…and the next year I entered the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts. I started to participate in some group exhibitions since my first year there. Four years later I obtained my degree and became a professional artist. I did one year of social service work at the Academy of Fine Arts as an Assistant Professor. Also, I had my first experiences working as a professional, organizing some exhibitions for the students, while in San Alejandro. I’m currently finalizing the fifth year of the Painting Specialty at The Visual Arts Faculty of ISA (University of the Arts). From 2009, until this date, I have made five Solo Shows. When I think about painting, the idea of the essential immediately comes to me, the relationship between the elements of the pictorial medium with synthesis, with pigmentation in its simplest form.
The pictorial elements comprise the greatness of their formal simplicity but at the same time, they also have philosophical connotations. Is it not the act of painting, a celebration of the present, an affirmation of being alive? Well, it may also be a way to rediscover the world.
